I LOVE Houston! What??!! Yes, I love it and let me tell you why!

I have lived in Houston for 36 years, having come here for my medical training. Houston has the 2nd largest medical center in the world, along with many other hospitals and outpatient care areas. It is a city of 2+ million, with an additional 3 million in close proximity, so we are a BIG city, with all that brings.

Very importantly (to me), we have citizens here from all over the world and have more consulates and embassies than DC or NY, as a result. People here get along well, regardless of their differences. It’s a friendly, very big city. And the food can’t be beat! If you have a hankering, we have a place you can go.

As an inveterate traveler, I fly to many destinations, which Houston enables with our 2 fabulous airports, both hubs for major airlines.

As a result, in my work you will often find a celebration of my adopted city. I live across the street from a bayou centered park- it is a long, thin park that has hike and bike trails, traveling 7 miles, all the way into downtown Houston and beyond. Houston’s Skyline District has the 4th largest concentration of skyscrapers in the US. Many of them are made of glass and steel, providing a panoply of beautiful reflections to capture and share with you, my new and loyal friends.

In these buildings, I find harmony between the structure and disciplined art of architecture and the lyrical, sinuous and transformative shapes that play upon the neighboring buildings. These reflections change by time of day, time of year and even by the position of the photographer. You wouldn’t believe what a difference six inches makes! I feel like a giddy kid in the playground as I capture these ephemeral visions for you. Not only do I keep my eyes on the scene as I move side to side, but also as I move forward and back. After I feel like I have captured the best of the location and move down the street further, I turn back around and am often amazed at how different the reflections and building geometry look from a different angle.

I have primarily shot these reflections in the morning, accompanied by my endlessly patient photo dog, Winston, a cute, cuddly Cavapoo. I need to go back in the evening to see how it’s different at that time of day. Even though I love my city, I would not go out at night without a human companion. So when I can recruit my amazing husband or daughter to come with me, I will have a whole new view of Downtown Reflections: Evening Version to share with you!

I can’t wait to show and tell you more!
